Collect amber on the Danish west coast
Collect amber on the Danish west coast
Amber hunting is best after a good storm has washed the amber off the seabed and onto the beach. Most amber is washed up south of Blåvandshuk, but it is possible to find the golden lumps all along the west coast. It's difficult to pinpoint the right conditions, but a calm day with offshore winds after a good storm from the southwest just after high tide is often best.
Found among the so-called 'amber stuff' - washed-up mussels, starfish, wood and seaweed - the coveted 'beach gold' can be recognised by the fact that it is lighter than stone and sounds like plastic when tapped lightly against the teeth.
What is Amber
Amber is resin from trees that grew 30-40 million years ago. It takes at least 20 million years for the golden resin to solidify and become a piece of amber. Amber is therefore not just a random stone - it is a portal to the distant past.
If you want a little extra help on your treasure hunt, you can use an amber torch. When the ultraviolet light from the torch hits a piece of amber, it will light up. You can buy an amber torch at the shop here in the holiday park.
Visit the exhibition "Gold of the Sea" and discover Western Europe's finest amber collection. Explore the amber treasure trove of 40 million-year-old insects trapped in resin, jewellery and masterpieces. Learn from amber collectors, get tips and discover the magic of finding amber on the coast.
