Esbjerg

Visit Esbjerg - Denmark's 5th largest city

Esbjerg is the metropolis of the Wadden Sea coast and is located about 40 kilometres from Hvidbjerg Strand. The city was born out of a disaster. At least for Denmark, which lost Southern Jutland in 1864. As a result, the country lacked a harbour from which to ship goods, primarily agricultural products, to the British market. The construction of the harbour was decided in 1868. Five years later, it was put into use.

Harbour and shopping

In 1880, Esbjerg had 1,500 inhabitants. In 1901, over 13,000 people lived in the city. Today, Esbjerg is Denmark's 5th largest city with 71,500 inhabitants.

The harbour has always been the driving force in Esbjerg. First as an export and fishing harbour. Then as a base for the oil and gas fields in the North Sea. And now the city is looking to the future with the wind at its back and the prospect of new forms of energy such as hydrogen and Power to X.

The city offers shopping opportunities, green parks and a beautiful music centre. Come and see it. Enjoy Man by the Sea - the four tall men. Look forward to the Fisheries and Maritime Museum and a Maritime Centre on Esbjerg Strand.

Fisheries and Maritime Museum

An excursion for the whole family
If you need a change from the beach, or if the summer weather doesn't live up to your expectations, you can visit the Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg with good reason. The museum, which calls itself 'Denmark's Museum of the Sea', opens up a world of maritime experiences and stories in a fantastic setting. At the museum, you can look forward to learning about life under, above and around the surface of the sea, and the museum's skilled interpreters create exhibitions that elegantly and interestingly tell maritime stories that entertain both young and old.

Since 1968, visitors have been able to visit the museum and get up close to Denmark's largest predator, the grey seal. You can also experience small and large fish and other marine animals through the underwater windows in the large saltwater aquarium, and for the brave, you can get up close to the animals in the small touch pool with sharks, rays and flatfish. All in all, a maritime world of experiences awaits you, just waiting to be explored.

Man by the sea

The meeting between man and nature
The 4 white men are 9 metre high sculptures in white concrete, built by painter and graphic artist Svend Wiig Hansen. The sculptures, also known as "Man by the Sea", were built in 1995 and have since then stood north of Esbjerg at Sædding Beach. The sculptures symbolise the meeting between man and nature and were built on the occasion of the municipality's 100th anniversary in 1994.

The white men
The sculpture is located directly opposite the Fisheries and Maritime Museum, which is one of the area's major tourist attractions and has made the sculpture a recognised landmark for Esbjerg. Whether you're on holiday with children or adults, a visit to the White Men is always recommended. The special location of the sculptures and their overwhelming size means that they can be seen from over 10 kilometres away.
