The Refugee Museum of Denmark is an international museum whose presence is dedicated to refugee history.
At the museum, you get up close and personal with history from the moment you arrive. The museum is composed of two original wings from the refugee camp's hospital, which have retained their exterior appearance with red bricks and small panelled windows. The two original wings are now connected by a beautiful 'curved' building designed by the Danish architectural firm BIG, which has beautifully linked the past and the present. You can't help but have an experience when you visit the museum that digs deeper into the emotions associated with being a refugee. From a historical, architectural and human perspective, you will take something away from the museum.
As a guest at Hvidbjerg Strand Holiday Park, you get a 20% discount on the day ticket to Tirpitz Museum, Flugt Museum, Blåvandshuk Lighthouse and the other museums under Vardemuseerne. Upon arrival at the museum, you must present your Hvidbjerg wristband to receive the discount, after which it will be deducted from the entrance fee.
As a sad reminder of the past and the many people forced to flee their homes and families today, Oksbøl is home to an old refugee hospital. The hospital served its purpose after World War II, when 250,000 refugees poured across the Danish/German border. The two original wings of the hospital have been given a 500 square metre addition that serves as both an entrance but also as a link between the two wings, nicely tying a bow around the whole story. However, the museum is not only dedicated to this time in refugee history, but also to the last 100 years of refugee flows into Denmark - flight has and unfortunately still is a worldwide issue.
In addition to the exhibitions inside, you can also take a walk outside for an extraordinary experience. You can visit the refugee cemetery, where many, especially women and children, were buried after a hard escape in the bitter winter cold. You can also go back in time with a tour through the time portal, where you'll be guided through the refugee camp by an audio-guided tour. You'll follow historical paths and routes that take you through the camp's kitchen, school, workshop and theatre, and along the way you'll meet some of the residents of the time.
FLUGT museum has a number of permanent exhibitions, but will also regularly have special exhibitions. Below are some examples of exhibitions that you can experience at FLUGT:
